HOPE AND VENOM

Today I went to buy some eyeglasses.Β  I went to a small, locally owned store in the next town over and proceeded to try on every pair of frames in the store.Β  I like to make sure I’m sure!!Β  πŸ˜‰Β  I’ve narrowed it down, but did not make a purchase today.Β  These are the frames that are at the top of my list…right now!

While I was there, a young woman came in, we’ll call her Hope.Β  She asked the owner, we’ll call him Lancelot, if he would be able to adjust her glasses.Β  Hope explained that she had fallen asleep with them on and they bent.Β  She asked if he could fix them and he said sure!

Hope went on to share that she had stopped at a national, well known eyeglass store prior to arriving here and that when she presented her glasses to the woman at the store, we’ll call her Venom, Venom was very rude to her.Β  Venom berated Hope for buying her eye wear online and made Hope feel so bad that she left the store.

Lancelot was stunned at Venom’s remarks, as was I.Β  He said it didn’t matter where the glasses came from and that he would gladly fix them.

While Lancelot was working on the frames, we were commenting on Venom’s insulting manner.Β  Hope was trying to contain her emotions but could not and began to sob.Β  She was so upset by Venom’s brashness.Β  Venom made this lovely young lady feel so small and ashamed of herself for having bought glasses online.Β  Imagine, the horror of it all, buying glasses online!Β  Seriously Venom?Β  Your attitude needs adjusting!!!

We comforted Hope and told her not to let Venom ruin her day, that Venom was wrong and discourteous.

Perhaps Venom was having a bad day, however, her harsh words to Hope were unnecessary.Β  Who knows what ramifications could have come from Venom’s intolerant attitude.

Good news, Hope’s glasses are all fixed.Β  I only wish we could have repaired her hurt.

  1. Unfortunately, some are self-centered and never stop to consider others feelings. Nice and poignant read.

  2. How sad that Venom was so venomous to Hope. It’s good that you and Lancelot were there to comfort her. Good for you, Deb! And, I love those glasses!!

  4. Venom probably needs to get fired. That is NOT how you do customer service.

  5. A good eyeglass shop cares more about you wearing properly adjusted glasses than where you bought. Rudeness is never necessary. In the course of my travels, I’ve had glasses (purchased in Australia) willingly and graciously repaired in Austria, Morocco, Congo, South Africa, Kenya, India and the USA.

  6. What was wrong in purchasing online glasses? The Hope’s experience was bad but I’m happy that you and Lancelot were there to comfort her. If all is not well then all is also not bad in this world.

    • We could not understand what was wrong with that either. Unless Venom felt glasses online are not of as good quality. They can be less expensive online and perhaps that’s all Hope could afford and now Venom made her feel sad about that. I love your last sentence, very prophetic.

Thank you Deb, I really meant it, for, you and Lancelot were the real hope on that day and now I understand what makes hope so sad. Definitely, her self-respect was hurt.

  7. Harsh words do more damage than physical harm … bruises heal but words resonate and return and resonate … let this be a lesson to all of us.
Glad you could both care for her.

    • You are correct with my metaphor…I too am glad we were able to comfort her and show her that Venom was just so wrong!! We definitely have to be more kind to each other…Venom has no clue as to how much she upset Hope with her words… thank you!! xo

    • Hmm. Why do people have to be outright rude. I mean even if they have had a bad day, doesn give them the right to take it out on others. Anyways we cannot change others and better let us be the change we want to see like the wise say:)

    • No they don’t! I’m sure Hope was taken aback at Venom’s attitude. But you are right…let’s be the change…let’s do something extra nice for someone tomorrow to send out good vibes to override Venom’s vibes from Saturday!! πŸ™‚

  9. Hi Deb…happy Sunday. Thanks for reading about the lady who bought glass’s online and got berated for it….its just another example of how mean people can be…and for what. There is no reason that people should be mean to others. I have a hard time reading, watching…seeing peopel do harm to others no matter if physical or verbal. Life is hard…why make it harder on others. There is no good reason for it.
Anyways….I hope you had a great week.
PS…did you have the chance to try grilled pizza?

    • Hi Daryl! Hope all is well with you!!
You are exactly right, life is hard and there is no good reason for it! People need to realize what affect their words can have on others…let’s all be kind to each.
I hope your week is filled with kindness!!
I have not tried it yet…I don’t have a grill, but it’s on my list!! πŸ™‚
Thank you so much for stopping by to say hello…

  10. Disclaimer: I am speaking as a retired eye doctor; I have no financial interest is anything related to vision care.
There was no call for rudness. Even if her company had a policy preventing her from repairing them, Venom did not have to be rude.
Peggy is correct that most offices will glad help a traveler in need, or most anyone for that matter.
The internet presents itself as the fly in the ointment. Most people buy online because of price. They are not buying from Lancelot, but an unknown entity. Often the work is substandard, and how many lay people know what the PD and Seg Hts are, let alonehow to take them properly. This is what Lancelot does for a living. He is trained and maintains an office/store with considerable overhead.
Often internet frames are from discontinued inventory and might be brittle and easy to break. Lancelot is there to stand behind his. Who is responsible if the internet frame breaks while Lancelot is adjusting it? Is it fair to buy from a person who offers no follow up and then ask Lancelot or his patients to subsidize it?
So whilst there is no call for rudeness, perhaps the patient who buys online needs to consider these things when buyng and when asking someone else to stand behind it.
And congratulations to you on choosing a reliable place, continuing to support Lancelot, and on a nice looking frame.

    • If Venom had said to Hope what you just said, that would have been perfect!! Hope would have understood and most likely agreed.
Perhaps too that Hope can only afford the frames on the Internet, as they can be very expensive.
I wish Hope had received your explanation from Venom and in a pleasant manner.
Thank you so much, I like the frames too!! πŸ™‚
And finally thank you very much for sharing so much information, I truly appreciate it!! Hope you are enjoying your retirement. πŸ™‚

  11. At first when we asked to get our glasses adjusted after we moved to Britain, we assumed we’d have to pay. In the U.S., it was always the case that if you hadn’t bought them there, they charged. So far, no one in Britain has ever asked for, or accepted, payment for it.
